Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote goodness or improve human quality of life. In return, this activity can produce a feeling of self-worth and respect. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development, socialization, and fun. It is also intended to make contacts for possible employment.
Resource poor schools around the world rely on government support or on efforts from volunteers and private donations to run effectively. There are many opportunities to volunteer in school systems and it's easy to do! Most schools require just voluntary and selfless effort.
Much like the benefits of any type of volunteering there are great rewards for the volunteer, student, and school. In addition to intangible rewards, volunteers can add relevant experience to their resumes.
Volunteering in schools can be an additional teaching guide for the students and help to fill the gap of local teachers. Cultural and language exchange during teaching and other school activities can be the most essential learning experience for both students and volunteers.
"My son has had a lunch buddy for two years now. He really looks forward to the time with his buddy and he enjoys the books they read. Thanks for including him." Lunch Buddy Parent
Lunch Buddies is a weekly reading/mentor program pairing one student with an adult volunteer. The goal of our program is to provide an enjoyable one on one reading lunch hour one day a week with a student and an adult who is focused entirely on him/her. The child benefits by learning that reading is fun and becomes more enthusiastic about books and learning. The volunteer benefits with an opportunity to give to their community and make a difference in the future. Volunteers form a meaningful and rewarding relationship with an elementary student. Volunteers make a connection with our local schools and become more positive, confident and optimistic about our future.
Lunch Buddies program is currently open at Rutherford Elementary School in the Central Dauphin School District. Rutherford is located at 6500 Clearfield Street, Harrisburg, PA 17111. ReadStrong2000 is recruiting for Rutherford for Tuesday lunches from October through May.
